Holy Poison is a six book series set amid the turmoil of the brutal reign of Bloody Mary, Queen Mary I, and her campaign to stamp out Protestantism and bring England back to the Catholic Church of Rome.
The Judas Pledge

In 1553, Bethany's only concern is how she can avoid a marriage to a stranger. When she meets the handsome and wealthy Lord Richard Summerville, his offer of marriage seems to be a gift from God. His insistence that she follow his outlawed Catholic faith troubles her, but not enough for her to refuse him.

His assurance that Mary Tudor will soon be Queen and will return England to the Catholic faith does little to deter Bethany, since she simply does not believe it. But when he is proved right, and Mary takes the throne, she finds the struggle to support her Catholic husband almost impossible.

What he did not tell her was that he would be close to the throne, that he would be at court with Mary and when his cousin tells her that he has presented his mistress to the Queen as his wife, her world is completely shattered.

That and the death of her sister as a martyr prompts Bethany to help the cause of aiding Protestants, but when Richard finds out, her life hangs in the balance.

The Flawed Mistress

Lady Rachel Stewart is a beautiful woman, the sort of beauty that makes both men and women turn their heads. But her beauty has forever been a burden and due to horrific childhood abuse, marriage is abhorrent to her.

When she meets Lord Richard Summerville, she expects him to be yet another whose only interest in her is having her in his bed. But Richard has far more compassion than any man she has ever met and he offers her his protection. She is known as his favourite mistress and as such she is safe from the advances of other men.

When he meets and marries Bethany, he does not want to withdraw his protection but Bethany is not told of Rachel and her true role in his life.

The Viscount's Birthright

When Lord Robert's estranged father dies, he expects to inherit the title and estate and finally be able to marry Camilla. But he is shocked to discover his Father's Will stipulates that he must marry Antonia, his late father's ward, in order to inherit. He suspects that she has played a part in his father's wishes, in order to capture a wealthy husband.

When he tells Camilla that he won't be inheriting, he is disillusioned to discover that she is not the woman he thought she was. There is only one avenue he can pursue; he must marry Antonia, but he reckons without her. She declares she would rather work for her living that marry such a boorish man.

Betrayal

Adrian Kennington is the soon to be Earl of Kennington. His father is dying and Adrian is working hard to learn all he can about running the estate when his brother tells him that he has fallen in love with Adrian's betrothed, Frances.

While he is horrified, he has no wish to marry a woman who is in love with someone else and he loves his brother and wants him to be happy. In secret, he helps them elope and take ship to the newly discovered Americas.

Adrian finds sixteen year old Marianne, being sold on the street by her drunken father, and he rescues her. For two years, he keeps her as his mistress, but he can never marry her and eventually he must think of the future and take a wife.

Lady Elizabeth is the woman he marries and falls in love with, but she has traumas from her own past. Her former betrothed, Elliott Sinclair, betrayed his entire family to the Catholic church for heresy. They are happy together, until Richard Summerville comes calling with orders from Queen Mary to help discover secret Protestants of which Adrian is one.

Elizabeth is terrified and wants to follow Adrian's brother to the Americas, but he cannot leave and the strain will tear them apart.

The Heretics

Trapped in a loveless marriage to a man whose interest is not with women, Julia turns to her handsome neighbour, Lord Richard Summerville, for comfort. One afternoon of passion gives her solace, until she discovers that her brief adventure has borne fruit.

But before she has a chance to tell Richard that she is expecting his child, he proposes marriage to her sister. Her husband suspects the truth and has promised to smother the child while she is still lying helpless from the birth.

She steals her husband's family jewels and flees, eventually coming to a farm where she meets Charles Carlisle. When Mary Tudor becomes Queen they both risk everything to help Protestants to escape to France.

Consequences

Queen Mary is dead and Lord Richard Summerville only barely escapes with his life. Now he must decide what to do with that life. He wants to return to the wife who betrayed him, the wife he still loves, but there are too many resentments between them to assume they can simply start again.

He goes home to Summerville Hall, expecting that it is only Bethany he needs to placate, but he finds his much loved cousin, Anthony, does not share his wish to forgive her. After a quarrel between the cousins, Anthony leaves, but nobody could guess the trouble he would cause them in their future.

They agree to put the past behind them, but that past seems unwilling to be forgotten when their sins begin to trample on their children's future.
